It seems a growing trend these days to get back to the basics and live a more connected life. Like so many others, we are daydreaming of days spent producing everything we need and spending more time working for ourselves versus someone else. For some, this desire manifests within the tiny living movement, or maybe it's in the release of stuff and embracing minimalism? And then there's the DIYers who are more drawn to a lifestyle of urban or non-urban homesteading...gardening and raising your own chickens. Whatever you choose to call it, or whatever your reason is to do it, it boils down to a desire to live more simply, sustainably and self-sufficient.

I would say here at our house, we are a generous mix of a desire to be more connected to our day to day actions, to live simply, and yet a deep urge to have a large plot of land to call our own. I'm crazy about gardening (though I have LOTS to learn) and someday want to be savvy enough to grow and preserve most of our food. We both want to reduce our expenses and increase our time; to get out from under debt so we don't have to work so hard and then we can "retire" (aka - travel, hike, learn, create, side-hustle) sooner.

Of course this all goes hand in hand with our downsizing efforts, so in addition to clearing out the clutter, here is a list of a few small changes we are making and skills we are learning as part of our goal to lead a simpler and less waste-filled life.

We converted pantry staples to glass jars and storage containers. We can buy a lot of these items in bulk and cut down on trash from packaging. This will also make small space storage a lot easier if the containers are all a similar size and we can plan accordingly.

This week I am going to research some easy sewing patterns to start sewing some of my own capsule wardrobe pieces. I have hoards of fabric just waiting to be transformed and an adjustable dress form that is begging to be used.

I will be learning to make various salves, soaps, teas, and treats from oils and herbs. So far I have tried whipped body butter made with coconut oil, cocoa butter, and shea butter, scented with lavender and grapefruit. It's a bit oily, but works great for dry hands and feet.

I have started experimenting with baking sandwich bread, dried fruits, etc. So far the bread isn't turning out, but I know I will find the right recipe and technique after some more practice.

I am starting several plants from seed this year and studying up on new gardening techniques, like permaculture and companion planting.

I am already making my own kombucha (mmmm.....booch) and daily wellness shots.

We started eating a plant-based diet last summer. We are about 90% vegan, but the past few months I have been on an elimination diet and the meats have started creeping back in.

It's been fun trying new things and learning how to create a few things from scratch. Especially the skills that could serve us well if there ever were an apocalyptic type event, or those which come from our family heritage and will be important to share and preserve for future generations. There's something to be said for the old ways of doing things, back when we were connected to where our food came from and we worked hard daily for our own health and happiness.

So raise a glass of kombucha with me and cheers. Here's to living a life more simply and sharing the progress as we go.

A few years ago my boyfriend and I started a Project Downsize in an effort to reduce the visual noise and outright clutter in our space. We wanted our home to be a reflection of the creative and easy lifestyle we desire to live.

As someone who constantly fights the battle between a home that feels cozy and filled with all the things I love (verging on hoarding) and a home that feels neat, tidy and organized, this was a challenge for me and all of my motivation quickly melted back into the couch. The timing also coincided with a full year of stagnant energy. If you lived through 2017... I'm sure you felt it too.

Viva, Project Downsize! 2018 edition.

These days we are feeling much more "unstuck" and quickly picking up speed on manifesting a few of our dreams. The original Project Downsize surrounded comfortable living in our current home, however, this time around we are shooting for a new dream. Ultimately, our goal is to live for a period of time in a tiny house or park model home on a 5 acre partially wooded lot while we build a small home that is tailored to us. Around it will bloom a herbal and vegetarian homestead (not vegan, because...chickens), a family, and creative spaces for both of us. A studio for me and a woodworking/auto shop for Will. A simpler life full of rich experiences.

It is becoming much more common these days to seek a simpler way to live, even if it doesn't involve "going tiny". I think on some level we are all looking to define ourselves by something other than our 9-5 career and enjoy this one magical life in a way that is meaningful by our own standards and not just the societal norm. Some may think we are crazy, but that's ok...it's our own kind of crazy.

The timeline for this project is to be "complete" by the end of Summer 2018. By complete, I simply mean that we will have all of our belongings pared down and ready for a tiny living lifestyle even if we aren't ready to move yet. With the exception of some furniture to sell and maybe some keepsakes to store, by September 1st we want to be ready to pack up and go.

Here's what is on the project list so far...

Go through ALL clothes and list anything that hasn't been worn in a year for sale

Go through All accessories and list items no longer worn for sale

Sell all kitchen appliances that are no longer used or are in need of an upgrade

Go through shoes and sell any that are no longer worn but gently used

Develop a capsule wardrobe (and determine if any key pieces are still needed)

Remove all boxes from the attic and go through them. Box keepsakes up for storage

Clear out the guest bedroom closet and use it only to store the items that are for sale

Scan all important documents and store on an external drive and on dropbox

Donate all books that I have read or no longer desire to read to the free library

Clean out and dismantle the storage shed in the backyard

Organize my computer and dropbox files and delete anything no longer needed

Pare down any items that we have more than one version of...pick the favorite.

Make a list of all furniture that will go with us and which items will be sold/given

In June, hold a garage sale and give away or donate all items that did not sell

We've gotten a headstart on a few things...

We've upgraded to an Instant Pot, so the crock pot was given away

Will has sold a lot of his team jackets and miscellaneous gear that he no longer uses

We fixed the furnace so the radiant heater is off to a new home

Several clothing items have already been listed for sale on ebay and offer up

I'm finally getting around to listing several thrifted items from storage in my etsy shop

With downsizing and planning for a homestead comes a desire to reduce waste and learn how to make a lot of your own food and consumables. I'll be posting more soon about the simple changes we are making and skills we are learning in preparation for a homestead lifestyle.

I can already tell this is going to be an amazing yet trying process. When I feel resistance I will try and focus on the freedom we will feel in the end when we are surrounded by only the things we truly enjoy and the clothes we feel good in. It sounds like heaven!

We are hoping to inspire others through this process, so I will be writing posts about our progress and about the reasons we are choosing to adjust our lifestyle. Even if you don't have a desire to go tiny, I hope you will join us in sifting through the items or emotions that may be holding you back from the lifestyle you desire, or even to learn a few new skills you have been meaning to add to your repertoire. Please use #ProjectDownsize2018 to share what you are up to. We would love to see and share.

Ok, that's it for now! We'll see you soon with an update.
Lavender, Eucalyptus, Lemon is my go to blend, especially when I'm in clean-the-house mode. But the blends in this yoga & meditation pack are becoming a close second.

Most of the time, I will blend oils together in our essential oil diffuser and the house smells amazing! But I've been longing to make a few candles using my favorite scents that I can bring with me when I travel or even give as a gift. That's when I remembered a DIY trick I once saw for adding botanical decorations to tea light candles. What if I could melt tea light candles and add my own scents? And right then, a new DIY idea was born.

Here are tips for how to create simple scented tea lights using your favorite blend of essential oils.

Step 1:

Preheat oven to the lowest setting. My oven was set on warming at 175 degrees.

Step 2:

Place a few tea lights on a foil covered cookie sheet and pop them in the oven for 10 minutes.

Step 3:

Prep your mix of essential oils.

I made four different candles by using a few pre-made blends (12 drops each), my own mix of lavender and lemon (6 drops each), and eucalyptus and lemon (8 drops and 4 drops). You can make them all the same scent or mix them up.

Step 4:
Check on the tea lights to see if they have melted. If not fully melted, give them a few more minutes in the oven.

Step 5:

Remove from the oven and add 10-15 drops of essential oils to the melted wax.

Be careful not to wiggle the tray around too much or the wax will spill out of the aluminum holders. If a little bit of wax escapes it's not a big deal, but it will make the tea lights stick to the aluminum foil after the wax dries. Simply peel off the foil and wipe away the excess wax.

Step 6:

Use a toothpick to gently stir the essential oils in. The wick will become loose once the wax is melted, so be careful not to move it too far out of place.

(Side note: On my first attempt, I added food coloring to try and tint the candles, but the water based food coloring did not mix with the wax and I ended up with little pockets of food coloring at the bottom of the candles. It became quite a mess once the wax dried and the food coloring leaked out from the aluminum holder. There may be another way to add color, such as melting crayon shavings into the wax, but take it from me...food coloring is not the way to go.)

Step 7:

Let the wax cool and become solid again. If you are working with more than one scent, keep your essential oils nearby to keep track.

(Note: For the safety of those precious essential oils, do not place bottles on the baking sheet while it is still warm.)

Step 8:

Write the scent of the candle on the bottom or side of the aluminum shell in sharpie. Then light and enjoy!

I chose to light the lavender and lemon candle first and it was heavenly! I used 12 drops (6 of each) in this candle and the scent was powerful without being overwhelming.

Depending on the essential oil, the wax may dry to be white or tinted. A few of my candles ended up with a yellowish color and some roughness to the top. Other candles dried white and smooth. If you start to see bubbles or indents forming, consider smoothing the top of the candle as the wax dries. You can also cover any roughness on the top of the candle by adding botanical elements such as lavender buds, bits of cedar or pine, cinnamon stick, or even glitter. Select your decorations according to the essential oil scent.

And there you have it! A simple way to add natural essential oil scents to a plain old tea light. I hope you enjoy making some of your own signature scents or giving a few away as gifts. And please share your scent recipes in the comments below!

Did you know, the month of May is Creative Beginnings Month? I haven't found much information regarding the origins of this celebration, but it sounds like a wonderful way to motivate some creative energy. There's no better time to start that new craft project you've been dreaming about, finish one that has been lingering in a between-the-creative-urges state, or share your creative passions or your new etsy shop with the world.

While there are a lot of makers out there who are fortunate enough to use their creativity daily and earn a living, the majority of us see creative projects as a hobby or luxury and sometimes tend to let life get in the way. If you identify with the latter, why not use this month as a challenge to nurture your creative spirit and enjoy dreaming up and creating something new? The creative process can enhance how you engage with other aspects of your life, including a boost of satisfaction and confidence from completing a project or learning a new skill. I for one, love the feeling I get when an idea or inspiration plucked from my mind comes to life.

The reality is, you can do and create almost anything. Sometimes it just takes the courage to get out of your comfort zone and see what happens. There may be times when you create something that doesn't quite turn out the way you had pictured it in your mind, but that is perfectly OK and for the most part expected. Not only did you try, you did what you set out to do...you created. Sometimes it's enough just to create something once, but if you choose you can do it over and over again until you have refined the process and end up with your perfect result. Either way, you will find satisfaction in knowing that you tried or you may even surprise yourself and create something you are profoundly proud of or maybe learn a valuable new skill. Why not find out?!

One easy way to come up with a creative project idea is to sit down and set a timer for 3 minutes. Quickly jot down all list of all of the creative things that you like to do or would like to learn how to do. Would you like to take a pottery class, write a poem, learn a new recipe, or play the piano? Whatever comes to mind, write it down. No judgment or worry about your skill level for now. When the timer goes off, read through your list and select a few ideas that you can begin immediately without buying additional supplies or signing up for a class. Then pick one and start today or even wait until tomorrow and see what continues to call you.

If you are interested in learning a new skill, Craftsy has classes for beginners and intermediates covering almost every crafty skill you can think of. There is seriously something for everyone and some classes are available for as little as $10. Some of my favorites are Professional Yarn Dyeing at Home, Metalsmithing At Home, and Creative Weaving Techniques.

Whatever your skill level, you most likely can begin right where you are with the tools and knowledge that you have. Just let the creative process meet you there. However, if the idea you have involves heavy machinery, fire, heavy duty adhesives or sharp objects, it is always best to sign up for a 101 class or professional guidance until you learn the basics and important safety measures. For intensive projects, invest in the building blocks and then see if your creative curiosity carries your forward.
Update #1:
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "trebuchet" , sans-serif; font-size: 14.3px;">
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "trebuchet" , sans-serif; font-size: 14.3px;">I've made some pretty good progress on clearing out the clutter, but there is still a long way to go. I have a few stacks of miscellaneous items that keep moving between rooms and piles. I have unearthed about 6 empty notebooks, 5 unused journals, and books I forgot I owned and haven't yet read. We've taken about 3 trips to goodwill, made a stack of things to sell, and you can finally see the floor in the guest bedroom! With every load donated and box broken down I feel lighter on my feet and stand up straighter.
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "trebuchet" , sans-serif; font-size: 14.3px;">
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "trebuchet" , sans-serif; font-size: 14.3px;">Here's what has been finished so far...

<ul style="color: #666666; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", Trebuchet, sans-serif; font-size: 14.3px; line-height: 1.4; margin: 0.5em 0px; padding: 0px 2.5em;">

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "trebuchet" , sans-serif;">2 boxes of clothes donated which freed up 2 of 4 Rubbermaid bins full of off-season, unused and ill fitting clothes.

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "trebuchet" , sans-serif;">1 box of shoes donated and a few gently used pairs ready to sell.

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "trebuchet" , sans-serif;">Organized all craft supplies by project type. I even have room left in the closet for more!

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "trebuchet" , sans-serif;">1 large bag of books ready to sell. The rest will be read and then donated. I won't NEED to visit a bookstore for a VERY long time...but I still might go to peruse the shelves. :)

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "trebuchet" , sans-serif;">Kitchen and laundry room cabinets organized and unused items donated. We now have a pantry for bulk goods!

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "trebuchet" , sans-serif;">Organize laundry room storage cabinets

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "trebuchet" , sans-serif;">Go through pantry, toss expired items and donate non-perishable goods

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "trebuchet" , sans-serif;">Organize the hall closet

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "trebuchet" , sans-serif;">So far I have found that I most likely have anything tool, type of paper or craft supply that I will ever need...or at least something to make what I need. Items that I have been hanging on to for sentimental value are not so sentimental anymore...so I must have filled the void those items once held. Many of the keepsakes and artwork I have been drawn to over the years are consistent with my style today. And it feels really good to get rid of clothes that no longer fit and remind you of what you once looked like or felt like. It feels much better to embrace who I am and the style I have today.

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "trebuchet" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "trebuchet" , sans-serif;">I'm looking forward to an organized home and maybe making a little extra money from the items marked for sale. I hope that all of the items donated find a good home as someone else's treasure. They were loved while they were here and are now free to bring joy elsewhere.

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , "trebuchet" , sans-serif;">

Cozy up with a cup of coffee and take a moment to notice the fall colors and layers of texture circling around you. There is inspiration here. There is energy to be harnessed and transformed into something special to carry you through the darker days of winter. Use it to fuel the warm flame glowing within your soul. Picture it growing brighter and flowing out of your fingertips and onto the canvas.

Today I will let inspiration flow and get carried away with creativity. I will surrender to the light within and paint with bright flourescent love. I will find ways to capture my art and carry it with me long after all of the leaves have turned.

Who says decluttering and deep cleaning is only for the Spring? As Fall sets in, I am craving cozy nights at home, and spending more time indoors means living up close and personal with the clutter that has accumulated over the last year...not to mention all of the extra clothes, books, crafting supplies, and knick knacks moved over from my previous apartment. There are boxes that have yet to be unpacked, items stored away after the move that haven't been looked at again since, and an obscene amount of clothing that is rarely if ever worn. It's time to get down right brutal and cut the fat.

So...this October, I am challenging myself to purge it all in my own Project Downsize. I started a few years ago in my tiny apartment just to make some room for me to live there as well. This time, it's not just about getting rid of clutter. It is about creating a home that reflects the lifestyle that we want to live going forward into 2017. It's about freeing up space for creativity and comfort to flow. It's about being happy and fulfilled humans in our humble abode.

Here's what is on the project list so far...

Go through ALL clothes and donate anything that doesn't fit or hasn't been worn in a year.

Go through ALL accessories and sell/donate everything that is no longer worn.

Go through shoes and donate any that haven't been worn in a year.

Sell or donate all appliances that are no longer used or had/need an upgrade

Go through all boxes in the attic and repack anything to be kept in labeled totes.

Clear out the guest bedroom. Paint and redecorate with only items that bring calm & joy

Clear out the guest bedroom closet and use only 1/2 of the closet for seasonal clothing, keepsakes, and gift wrapping supplies. The rest should be open for guest use.

Clean out the bathroom vanity and toss any old or empty products.

Clear out the office closet and only put back in crafting items I will use. Donate the rest.

Organize the office and make space for creative projects and yoga/meditation.

Go through the boxes of books and organize into Read/Donate/Sell.

Organize computer files and delete anything no longer needed.

Scan important documents into electronic format and store in a secure location

Clean out personal email inbox and unsubscribe from newsletters

Decorate the bedroom. Add new sheets. Organize, update nightstands. Organize dresser.

Build a bookcase/door for the entry closet and decorate.

When everything above is done...have the professionals come and clean!

I've gotten a headstart on a few things over the last few weeks.

Organize laundry room, including storage cabinets

Go through pantry, toss expired items, and donate any non-perishable goods.

Organize the hall linen closet.

As you can see I have ALOT to do! With 16 items and only 4 weeks, I better get busy and see how far I get during October. I'll be using my bullet journal to track progress and plan on sharing before/afters & lessons learned here along the way.

It's going to feel SO good when this is done and our house is organized and clean! All the physical baggage will be gone and I will be ready for anything! If you would like to join me with your own organization or decluttering project, use #projectdownsize2016 to tag your posts on social media.

I feel lighter already!

It's time to make room for the next big thing. Over the last several months you have let go of beliefs and mentalities that no longer serve you. You are being true to you. Now it is time to ask yourself what you really want your life to look like? What, if anything, and who do you want to take with you journey? Paint the picture and manifest that reality for yourself. Create a life you love.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today, I will take the challenge and set up my current space (physical and mental) to make room for a divinely designed life. I will open myself up to the ideas and plans which are meant to move me forward and aligned with the lifestyle I desire.

Has it really been over a year since I was last here in this space?

Honestly, I feel a tad bit relieved because I seriously thought it had been longer.

So...how are you? I've missed you!

Me? Well, let me tell you a little bit about what I have been up to since I last checked in before the start of B-School, GG2CB, and the Sacred Alone. I completed each of the courses, but ended up more overwhelmed than ever. I started to really question what I wanted to do next, what my passions were, and then when I thought I had it worked out self doubt creeped in. I quickly sunk down inside of myself and just laid there still. Hunkered down. I was self preserving.

Not long after, life just picked me up and decided I was now going in the passenger seat. The truth is, I've been drifting. Taking each day one step at a time and tackling whatever came my way.

Don't get me wrong, there has be a lot of fun in the last year and half. I took some classes, read some books, watched some great football, got a promotion, moved in with my boyfriend, grew a little garden, and more. But it has been a little aimless and went by in such a blur!

Looking back on past posts and images I created, I am shocked that I let this slip away so easily. (I blame this mostly on my laptop breaking, but there's definitely more to it.) I feel like I had really found my visual style and voice and I was ready to take it further and start a business helping others to do the same. The trouble is, I realized that my passion for graphic design wasn't actually I wanted to invest my time and build a career. I had a passion and talent for it, but when faced with a decision to start building a business, I wasn't feeling it. I wasn't afraid. I think it wasn't really in alignment with the lifestyle I desired. It's a good thing that I figured that out before I took the leap, but ultimately I wound up feeling lost. I thought I had finally found it...that elusive Purpose.

So today, I am here at another crossroads, similar to where I last left you. In all of the changes and growth that happened over the last year, I recently realized I somehow lost myself. I lost touch with my creative force. I lost connection with my body and my mind. I drifted far away from everything I thought I knew about what I wanted. So, here and now I am starting over. I am coming back to the place where I last left myself.

I've learned that the only way to plug back in is to make room. In order to reconnect with my creative force, I must create. To love my body and mind, I must embrace each lovingly and give them adequate room to breathe. To ground myself, I must focus within and make space to honor what I need each day. It's time for self love. It's time to put these important pieces of myself first and take back the drivers seat.

I will be musing here at joyful.life periodically about life, personal challenges, music, and anything that inspires or moves me. At the same time, it is my intent to build another website/blog focused on the fitness/health/goal-setting side of my life...but more on that later. For now, I just wanted to take the first step towards reconnecting with my spirit and my sacred online space.

I am already feeling better.

Oh, how I have missed you.

Today I am at a crossroads.

In the coming weeks I will be faced with a choice. The choice to stay exactly where I am or dive in and become the person I was born to be. A good part of me is swimming in fear and desires to stay where I am comfortable, while the rest of me is excited to see what happens next.

You see...I signed up for B-school. (If you've been on facebook or reading blogs lately, you might have heard it mentioned.) B-school is a tried and true program for how to successfully and authentically run your dream business online. And then I signed up for The Sacred Alone because it sounded like some kind of wonderful and I know I am missing out on the benefits of stillness. Oh...and then there is GG2CB which I signed up for a few months ago and after a short delay is launching very soon. Holla! (Remember that time when I said I might be overcommitted? Yeah...this is why.) I've invested in myself and starting Monday my mega-training will commence.

Why am I nervous?

Because I no longer have an excuse not to be the person who I desire to be.

I will have a huge arsenal of tools at my disposal and an even bigger support group. I will have someone(s) else rooting me on. And I will be surrounded by others in the same boat and succeeding like whoa.

That's scary, right?!

Accountability? Support? Coaching? Resources? No excuses.

I am absolutely terrified of the enormity of it all. Big dreams are intense!

So, in the interest of fully diving in and following my wildest dreams, I've decided to take a short hiatus from blogging. I will definitely be back...because my brewing plans include this little blog of mine and maybe even a facelift or redesign? I certainly hope to have a renewed blog-passion when I return...maybe in the middle if inspiration hits...and I hope to see you again soon.

Until then, here is a free desktop wallpaper to remind and encourage you to...

BE the person you were born to BE.

Follow your BIG dreams and make yourself proud.

This week I am grateful for the natural shifts happening around us. The past few months have been draining, stagnant and dreary, but the new moon over the weekend has brought us all a welcome change. It is time to pay attention to how we are feeling and new dreams that may be calling us. Commit to change where it feels right. Let go of behaviors or ideas that may stifle us as well as future expectations that no longer serve how we desire to live.

The past few days I've found myself over-committing out of eagerness for change. Saying "Yes!" feels wonderful and all of these additions are exciting...don't get me wrong...but I am a little worried for my sanity. This week I will work on how to follow through fluidly...positioning myself 100% behind my choices and having fun with it. I will focus (2014 one word!) on setting up new rules and intentions to help manage so many additional commitments, and focus on letting go of what no longer works or no longer serves my growing list of new directions and new dreams.

Do you have one thing that you will commit to let go of this week?

A new cycle. The most recent new moon (Aquarius on January 30th) brought with it the opportunity for renewed creativity, inspiration, and the energy to become the person who you were born to be. Whatever it is that you are waiting for (or striving for) in order to begin your dream is either not necessary or already within you. You are ready. Follow your heart.

To honor this much needed energy throughout February, and keep a gentle reminder front and center, I have created 3 free desktop backgrounds. I am using "You Are Ready" to keep self doubt at bay and keep moving forward on the next big adventure. To get yours just double click on the image to open it in full size, then right click to select "Save Image As..." and save it where you choose. Next, locate the image on your computer and right click on the file to set it as your desktop background. Go get 'em Tiger!
There are so many things I want to learn or try that I often find myself overwhelmed by The List. So this year, I wrote down 52 things I would like to learn about or do this year, put each on a slip of paper and dropped them in a jar. Each week I will pull out a slip and spend some time working on that project. This week...learn ways to light a photo.

How did you like my "hey, monday" post on a Thursday yesterday? Shame that I "accidentally" hit the publish button on a post that was meant for next week! Or...maybe...I didn't realize it wasn't Monday until half way through the morning...but oh well it felt like a Monday for most of us. The first real day back to the grind.

So it's 2014. I have to admit I was nowhere near ready for the new year. Typically I spend some time the week or two before reviewing the year that just passed, planning for the year to come, and picking my one word to guide me through. This year it all snuck up on me. All of a sudden it was New Year's Eve and I had no clue how to end one wild year and start the next. So, I spent most of day one listening to what I was craving more of and figuring out how to make that happen. (Thank you new moon!) But I'll tell you more about all of those plans next week.

Until then, I wanted to encourage you...if you have not done this already...to come up with a word of your own. Or maybe just set an intention for the new year. How do you want to feel when the year is over?

Still not sure? Here are some links to help inspire you.

There is so much inspiration out there, but the truth and direction can only come from within. Take a moment to be still, have some lavender & chamomile tea, listen to the whispers and lean in to whatever may be calling you. Trust what feels right.

And don't worry if you don't spend 100% of your time trying to manifest your chosen "feeling" this year. Just remember to use it as a guide when asking yourself what you want to do with that spare hour, or what you are going to have for lunch, or whether you want to watch a comedy or a drama tonight, or what you want to wear today. Try your best, but even the smallest details can make a big difference.

Happy New Year! Welcome to 2014.

Focus on step one. The first page of a brilliant story. The first day you let go of the past and lean in to the future. Express gratitude for where you have been, where you are today, and for every small triumph as you move closer to your dreams. You can do this. There is nothing in your way that cannot be overcome. Your path may be longer, slower, or more treacherous than others, but it is yours to complete. To master. Focus today on step one.

Today, do one thing that moves you in the right direction. This week, make a plan for keeping the momentum going. And this year, my hope for you is that you find your passion, realize your goals, and embrace your power to effect change. Be brave and make this year a year to remember.

This week I encourage you to brew a cup of tea in your favorite mug, get cozy with some gratitude and relax into this month's mix. With all of the holiday hustle and bustle be sure to make time for a time out. You know...one of the good ones. One of those "I'm going to pamper myself from head to toe - soak up a little ME time - do that thing that makes me feel beautifully giddy - fall madly in love with 'yours truly' - the rest of the world can wait" kind of nights. It's time to take care of yourself as we head into the new year, and it's never too soon to start.

I've been spending a lot of time at the office the past few months. It's been a bit tiring but overall I have learned a lot and feel more confident in my day job abilities. Getting back to business here at joyful.life I thought it would be fun to share some of the tricks that kept me balanced on those late nights.

(Speaking of balance, it's about that time to check in on 2013 intentions and start planning for 2014. How about you?)

Now, adequate sleep and relaxation time are the best solutions for keeping balanced at work, but when you find yourself stuck at the office late, here are a few tricks to stay energized and alert without crashing hard or getting too wired up. Stash these items in your "goodies" drawer (come on, I know you have one!) at your desk and you will be ready to rally.

1. A water bottle - To maintain concentration be sure to drink water! The recommended amount is 8 glasses a day (or 1oz for every 2 lbs of body weight) to maintain essential cell function and keep your energy high. I like this Glass Water Bottle by Ello.

2. Dark Chocolate - Just a few squares of dark chocolate can boost energy levels and mood. Antioxidants, vitamins, caffeine and a stimulant called theobromine make this a good for you treat...in moderation. The darker the chocolate the better for you, but I like Lindt's A Touch of Sea Salt or you could even whip up a batch of these and keep them in your purse for a quick snack any time.

3. Dried fruit - Complex carbs are good for you! They are full of fiber, which is a great source of steadily burned energy and helps to keep you fuller longer. If you are starting to get hungry, but don't want to spoil (a late) dinner, grab a handful and enjoy.

4. Socks (or a sweater) - Make yourself cozy! Why not kick off those painful heels and let your feet relax for a bit while you finish up that spreadsheet. Or snuggle up in a favorite sweater so it feels more like home.

5. Earbuds or speakers - Pop in your favorite playlist and keep yourself motivated. If you are alone - or even if you aren't - feel free to sing along!

6. Aromatherapy - Use aromatherapy lotion or oil (no candles in the office please!) to boost your energy. If you're starting to fade, perk up by dabbing a little oil on your pulse points. Lemon, orange, peppermint, clove, rosemary, or sandalwood will do the trick. Just make sure you are kind to your neighbors who may be sensitive to scent. If the oil you have isn't meant for use on skin, make a room spray by adding 40-60 drops to a small spray bottle full of water and spritz the air around you.

7. Green Tea - If you plan to be at the office late, try drinking 3 to 5 cups during the day (daily is even better!) to help you maintain steady energy levels. High concentrations of natural antioxidants are good for you all the time, so consider adding green tea to your daily routine. I like Tazo Zen Green Tea because it has a milder flavor than some other green teas I have tried.

8. Protein - A great fuel source and, like water, important for proper cellular function. If you are feeling hungry try some jerky, tuna, nuts, cottage cheese (if you have a fridge), protein bar or oatmeal to take the edge off and keep on truckin'.

9. Refresh spray or wipes - Refresh your skin after sitting in that dry office air conditioning all day long. Try Evian Mineral Water Facial Spray. And if there's no one left to impress, use make up remover wipes like Yes To Cucumbers to give your face, neck and arms a quick wake up.

10. Spirits - Wine, beer, or a Cuba Libre...you may as well have some fun while you're there! Keep it limited to one drink, be sure to double check your employer's policy on alcohol at the office, and - as always - never drink and drive.

There you have it! A tried and true guide to keep yourself moving when a long day becomes longer at the office. I sincerely hope you have found adequate balance between your work life and personal life, but if duty calls now you are well prepared.

Last night I dreamt of a house. A rustic rambler with large windows, wooded grounds, and muti-level nooks and wings leading to surprises around every corner. In my dream I bought the house and started to prepare for a few renovations. The beauty of the home was challenged as problems were found, but my love did not falter. It would all work out. It was my own. My home.

Pay attention to what comes to you in your dreams this week. What are these symbols telling you? Your subconscious may be craving a new inspiring space. Maybe your sense of place could use some attention? Or your heart is craving family and home connections. These gentle nudges from our sleeping mind can lead us in wonderful directions. Take a little time to make the connections and let me know what comes next for you in the comments below. I'd love to hear about what is hiding in your dreams.

I can feel something brewing. Something amazing. Maybe it is the excitement of the holidays, or a glimpse of light in the tunnel I've been trekking through. Maybe it is the coziness of winter, or the contagious nature of watching friends and family following their passions. Whatever the cause, there is glitter flowing through my veins again and I am ready to go. No matter what may be standing in your way, spend some time working at your dreams. Brew a cup of tea, blow the dust off, get settled in and get started. Never say never. Inspiration will always come back around.

Today I'm thinking a lot about change. About how to release parts of ourselves and embrace new habits, lifestyles and experiences. I seem to be asking myself a lot more frequently lately, "What path am I on?" and "What comes next?" A clear sign that something...whether big or small...isn't working, or just doesn't feel right. Putting a finger on what that is exactly is always the hardest part.

This week I will spend some time bridging the life I am currently living and the life I am dreaming of. It's time for transition. In fact, I'm in the process of revamping my nutrition and this week the focus is Release. I think that makes this a perfect time for purging my closets once again, cleaning up my home and work space, and some good ol' fashion emotional "letting go". I want to feel lighter and more prepared. I want to feel set up and ready for change or inspiration...or whatever may come my way.

What is one thing you would like to release from your life this week? Here is an exercise to help you decide...Picture yourself at one side of a bridge and on the other side is the lifestyle, the career, or the relationship that you have been dreaming of. All you have to do is release the object you are holding on to and walk across. What do you feel is holding you back from taking that first step? Now, let it go.
